About the Department
The University IT Accessibility Coordinator oversees university-wide efforts to provide an IT environment that is accessible to all members of the community. The position proactively and systemically addresses overall accessibility of campus IT systems and infrastructure to improve the usability and interoperability of university IT resources and instruction delivery mechanisms for people with disabilities. This is accomplished through evaluation and testing of software, systems, websites and other digital tools, then working with the developer, creator, or vendor to address shortcomings in meeting accessibility standards, as well as through providing training to developers and campus content creators on how to develop accessible resources. This position works with numerous campus units and individuals and leads the IT Accessibility Advisory Working Group, made up of representatives from throughout the university.



Essential Job Duties
Oversight of Accessible IT Environment

Evaluates the state of university IT services and tools and focuses accessibility efforts on areas of greatest need and highest risk to the university.
Works with developers and content creators to find ways to create applications, services and content that is accessible and remediates that which is not.
Evaluates IT purchases for accessibility compliance, based on a risk matrix, as part of the IT Procurement process. Works closely with the dozens of purchasers and vendors during the evaluation and testing process.
Assists digital resource developers or campus resource users in creating Equally Effective Alternative Access Plans when an application or service can not be made accessible but still must be used.
Oversees captioning grant and encourages its timely use.
Leads the IT Accessibility Working Group with goal setting for the next round of progress based on coordinated needs assessment.
Training and Community Engagement

Provides online resources and training (via classroom, online, and one-on-one) for content creators and software developers for making digital tools and content accessible.
Works with and through Distance Education and Learning Technology Applications (DELTA), campus web and app developers, Office of Faculty Development, campus communicators, Disability Resource Office, Office of Institutional Equity & Diversity, etc. to consult with and raise awareness of need for fully accessible digital tools and content.
Manages and administers accessible testing tools and resources used by campus developers and content creators.
Research & Development

Keeps abreast of technology developments, issues and changes surrounding IT accessibility through active engagement within the IT accessibility community and through other available resources.
Incorporates learning and best practices into development and content creation guidelines and procedures within the NC State environment.
Regularly evaluates the campus ICT Accessibility regulation to make sure it is in line with state and federal ADA regulations and guidelines such as WCAG 2.0.
Explores innovative campus accessibility initiatives such as improving digital campus wayfinding / online mapping for those with disabilities.
Performs analytics web work to prioritize accessible content.

Other Responsibilities
Assist with the functions of the Outreach, Communications and Consulting unit as appropriate.


Minimum Education and Experience
Mid- to late- career with Masters degree and 2-4 yrs experience or Bachelors degree and 3-5 yrs experience.



Other Required Qualifications
Extensive experience with and understanding of Universal Design principles and accessibility issues related to emerging web technologies, multimedia and learning environments

Project management skills

Strong customer service skills

Knowledge of existing and emerging assistive technology hardware and software

Knowledge of disability law (as applies to higher education), state and national disability resources

Written and Oral Communication skills with the ability to create documentation, develop and deliver training to users with a wide range of technical abilities



Preferred Qualifications
Prefer DHS Trusted Tester V5 training or similar certification programs
