Digital Accessibility Instructional Specialist

The Office of Digital Accessibility is seeking an individual with a background in digital accessibility and instructional design to support the successes of the current office and continue a culture of digital accessibility and inclusion across the university. This role will work with both departmental and campus partners to identify and implement solutions regarding digital accessibility for instructional materials and staff training content. Activities include sharing expertise in the application of digital accessibility best practices to instructional course design, creating accessibility resources to guide campus instructional partners, developing accessibility skill pathways for defined roles, and supporting the integration of accessibility and instructional technology solutions to result in effective learning experiences for all participants.

The individual should have a strong background and knowledge about instructional practices and the accessibility of instructional materials as it pertains to individuals with disabilities, along with a broad understanding of existing accessibility standards, such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 and 2.1, Level A and AA standard.

This is a two-year, fixed term position.

As a Digital Accessibility Instructional Specialist in the Office of Digital Accessibility, reporting into University IT, you will:

Consult with and support instructional designers, instructional support teams, and departmental groups regarding the accessibility of electronic content and foster the development of accessibility strategies and solutions. Design, develop, and maintain documentation and best practices for the creation of accessible digital instructionally related content.
Use your creativity and strategery to provide consultation and support to the instructional community for increasing their own digital accessibility muscles. Develop resources and engage with instructors, academic technology specialists, instructional support teams, and content owners to assist in interpreting, understanding, and developing solutions to guide instructional teams in the creation and delivery of accessible instructional materials.
Engage with campus partners to design and develop staff training materials detailing digital accessibility best practices that align with skill pathways and specific job roles.
Work with campus technology trainers to incorporate accessibility checkpoints into the design or revision of training materials in STARS or other content platforms.
Help us demonstrate and celebrate our continued and sustained progress by defining metrics and methods to track accessibility progress in our instructional platforms and staff training content to ensure that we are effectively implementing our practices and doing the right thing.
Collaborate with related campus staff and groups, including the Office of Accessible Education, Academic Technology Specialists, Learning Technologies and Spaces, and Center for Teaching and Learning to address concerns related to accessibility in the online learning environment. Conduct workshops on topics related to the design, delivery, and support of high-quality online teaching and learning and topics related to accessibility for online courses.
Be excited to contribute to reports, articles, presentations, and training materials so we can scale our knowledge and increase the culture of accessibility at Stanford.

Minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities required

Strong knowledge and the application of accessibility best practices, per W3C WAI guidelines and specifications (WCAG, WI-ARIA etc.), Section 508 and other evolving accessibility standards, as related to instructional materials.
Demonstrated effectiveness in consulting with business partners and subject matter experts to assess learning needs and recommend high-impact learning solutions and learning curricula.
Demonstrated expertise with instructional design methodologies, pedagogical issues and best practices for online and hybrid learning within a higher education environment. Technical proficiency with educational technology tools and software including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Adobe Captivate, Camtasia Studio, Panapto, Instructure Canvas, Articulate Storyline, Flipgrid, and other digital platforms used for instructional purposes.
Demonstrated skills in project management of learning development projects involving eLearning authoring, audio, video, and text production and post-production, including product evaluation and testing. Ability to work both collaboratively with a team and independently to establish and manage shifting priorities.
Ability to quickly learn and assess new technologies, digital tools and platforms for accessibility conformance and potential impact on individuals with disabilities.
Committed to client satisfaction: exceptional skills in collaboration, consultation, communication, client support and analysis.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with all members of a learning team, vendor partners, and business partners to create a learning environment that is service-oriented, supportive, engaging and effective for adult and nontraditional learners. Polished written and oral communication skills to address a wide variety of audiences, including higher education content authors, instructors, faculty, and administrators.
Working knowledge of assistive technology products such as NVDA, JAWS, Dragon Naturally Speaking, Kurzweil, Read and Write, and others.
