Digital Accessibility – Graduate Student Assistant

This hourly Graduate Student Assistant position supports the work of the digital accessibility initiative team within Strategy & Academic Initiatives. Under the supervision of the Senior Director, the student will serve as a web information specialist, developing and maintaining digital content across multiple UW websites, ensuring accuracy, usability, and compliance with accessibility standards. The position contributes to enhancing the student experience, supporting faculty innovation, and ensuring equitable access to information and resources across the university. Duties and Responsibilities: Content Development & Management: Create new digital content (documentation, FAQs, guidance) to support accessible course design and delivery. In consultation with unit representatives, review and edit existing content across Teaching@UW, Academic Technology Services, Learning Technologies, Student & Educational Technology Services, UW Libraries, and Digital Accessibility websites. Identify gaps, outdated information, and areas for improvement. Accessibility & User Experience: Ensure all new and revised content aligns with WCAG and DOJ accessibility standards. Conduct user experience testing with UW stakeholders to identify usability issues and inform improvements. Collaboration & Accuracy: Collaborate with subject-matter experts to verify accuracy and consistency of resources. Work with cross-unit teams to ensure consistent communication and alignment across websites. Other Duties: Attend and occasionally lead meetings with ASA, UW-IT, Libraries, and other UW staff. Perform other duties as assigned. This position is central to the University’s digital accessibility initiative, ensuring UW’s guidance is accurate, actionable, and comprehensive. The role strengthens collaboration between ASA, UW-IT, Libraries, and campus partners on accessibility-related communications. Required Qualifications: Currently registered UW graduate student. Preferred but not required: Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Human Centered Design & Engineering, English, Information Science or related field Required skills, knowledge, abilities, or experience: Excellent written and oral communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Initiative, judgment, and attention to detail. Desire and ability to learn new technologies and share knowledge with colleagues. Desired skills, knowledge, abilities, or experience: Experience with production management systems (e.g., WordPress, Drupal). Knowledge of web page design, XHTML/CSS, web graphics, and accessibility standards. Familiarity with the organizational context of a large university. A personal interest in work that promotes student success and faculty excellence. Experience or training related to digital accessibility. Experience serving as a teaching assistant at the UW. Work Schedule: Flexible schedule. Expectation of 10-19.5hrs/week.
