Accessibility Remediation Specialist

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking an Accessibility Remediation Specialist for the department of Communications and Marketing within the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. This position supports SEBS/NJAES in achieving federally mandated accessibility compliance by auditing and remediating digital content to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards, in collaboration with web development and IT teams. Among the key duties of the position are the following: * Collaborates with the Office of Public Outreach and Communications Web Development team and other personnel responsible for maintaining SEBS/NJAES websites to audit and remediate accessibility issues in webpages, PDFs, and other online documents. * Ensures all web content and documents comply with WCAG 2.1 AA standards by performing remediations using Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Dreamweaver, WordPress, Deque Axe Monitor, and other accessibility tools. * Tests websites and digital documents with accessibility tools (e.g., Deque Axe Monitor, screen readers) to identify new compliance issues. Minimum Education and Experience: * Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience in web development/design, information technology, computer science, human-computer interaction, or other related field. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: * Extensive knowledge and experience with web technologies (HTML, CSS, and web content management systems). * Extensive knowledge and experience with WCAG 2.1, Level AA accessibility standards and guidelines. * Experience creating accessible PDFs and remediating PDF accessibility issues. * Familiarity with disability law, including but not limited to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. * Effective written and oral communication skills. * Ability to work under deadlines, plan, organize, and execute multiple and continuing assignments. Preferred Qualifications: * 1-2 years of working in digital accessibility or web development. * Demonstrable knowledge of WordPress and Drupal. * Experience with accessibility audit and quality assurance tools and processes. * Experience developing and delivering training workshops and webinars. * Experience working with Adobe Creative Suite (especially Acrobat) and Microsoft Office. * Familiarity with scripting languages (PHP, JavaScript). * Experience in web auditing and/or project management. * Familiarity with the Rutgers Web Policy and Visual Identity Standards. Equipment Utilized: * HTML, CSS, WordPress, Microsoft Office, and Adobe Acrobat. Physical Demands and Work Environment: * Ability to work 5 days in person on campus.
