Senior Program Manager - Accessibility
Remote - US
At GitHub, our mission is to be the home for all developers. More than a billion people in the world are estimated to live with disabilities and we are determined to build a GitHub platform that is inclusive for everyone.
We’re looking for an experienced Program Manager to join GitHub’s Accessibility Design team. In this role, you will help deliver on product strategy and vision for how we’ll not only make all GitHub products accessible by design, but also how we’ll take advantage of our tremendous opportunity to leverage our platform to help all developers ship more accessible code. You’ll collaborate with a diverse team of globally distributed engineers, product managers and designers to deliver experiences impacting millions of developers worldwide, educate stakeholders throughout the company, and amplify the team’s work. You’ll operationalize frameworks for how the team works, optimize for cross-functional collaboration, and ensure our workflows are built for scale.  Accessibility is a top priority within GitHub’s goals, and this role has wide opportunities for meaningful impact.
The Design Org at GitHub is composed of talented individuals who have backgrounds in product design, design systems, brand design, and illustration, as well as CSS experts, and engineers with front-end and full-stack experience working in Rails and React.js.
What we're looking for:
Program Managers at GitHub are strong individual contributors and leaders; they're given a lot of autonomy and trust to work on high impact projects. For this specific role, we're looking for someone who values the following:
* Systems thinking: Our team has to apply decisions holistically, making sure to look at new patterns in the context of the larger product, as well as ensuring we support experiences for individual features.
* Inclusive design: GitHub is a home for all developers and our design system should reflect that. This means including and learning from people with a range of perspectives. Designing for inclusivity first can lead us to solving problems for the many, and open up our product for more people.
* Creating together: Getting to the right result is our focus, this can come from systems designers or product designers, and ideally both. Facilitating collaboration between teams and individuals is key so that we continue to evolve the design system alongside the needs of the product.
* Progress and impact: Our team often works on the meta and so it's easy to get caught up in the design details. We have to be mindful of this and ensure we keep making decisions and move forward. This means being solutions-oriented and prioritizing progress over correctness when it's the right call.
* Candidness: We encourage candidness and recognize its role in building trust between peers and leadership. It can take time and effort to get there but it's worth it. Making decisions for projects, design patterns, and processes, will yield better results when we can get to the “real talk”.
Responsibilities:
* Work closely with the designers and engineers to triage issues, coordinate execution, and ensure work is implemented effectively and accurately
* Design and build processes that enable agile work, encourage candid feedback, and shipping to learn methodology
* Partner with Design, Engineering, and Product leadership to develop the Accessibility Roadmap, shape high priority goals for accessibility, and define program performance metrics
* Create learning and development materials, documentation, and onboarding programs in the area of inclusive and accessible design standards
* Build a program that amplifies the team’s work internally and externally through training sessions, disability awareness labs, speaking engagements, and more
* Own regular reports to stakeholders that share the state of accessibility, progress, and the results of the team’s work
* Become an authority on inclusive design and accessibility compliance, setting the standard for our design system and how this is embedded in GitHub’s design practice.
Minimum Qualifications:
* You have 2 years or more experience in accessibility and inclusive design
* You have 5 years minimum project management experience as an individual contributor
* You have experience designing and implementing programs that enable scale and awareness of accessibility, with a demonstrated ability to define and deliver success
* You have experience defining and managing KPIs, strong understanding of business operations, as well as experience analyzing cost/benefit tradeoffs, and conducting industry research
* You have led complex programs that are high-impact, cross-functional, and influence a cultural shift in product development
* You thrive in fast-paced environments and have demonstrated success in building trust across teams
* You are familiar with modern software development practices used to build and deploy web and mobile applications
* High level of comfort communicating effectively across multiple stakeholders and senior leadership
* Ability to utilize data to produce and distribute a program performance narrative (and presentation) including: key performance indicators, successes and challenges, and next steps for key stakeholders and senior leadership
* You are passionate about GitHub and the opportunities that lie ahead of us
Preferred Qualifications:
* You have first hand experience with assistive technologies
* You have experience contributing to design systems within an organization or as part of an open-source project
* You are confident in writing HTML & CSS and are comfortable using Git version control
* You are a confident designer
* You have experience using GitHub for your team or for personal projects
We encourage people with lived experiences to apply.
