The American Heart Association has an excellent opportunity for a Sr. Digital Accessibility Manager in our National Center office located in Dallas, TX.

The Sr. Digital Accessibility Manager is responsible for guiding internal stakeholders in digital accessibility development, testing, and remediation and verifying American Heart Association’s compliance to WCAG and other accessibility requirements. This role is responsible for educating staff and contractors how to implement and test webpages, mobile applications, PDFs, and other tools or communications.

The Sr. Digital Accessibility Manager will facilitate accessibility governance processes, including monitoring the Association’s digital properties for WCAG compliance, review and follow-up of extension requests, and recommending and overseeing tools that support delivery of accessible solutions (e.g., Siteimprove and Deque axe). This position interfaces with third-party vendors, American Heart Association's Legal team, business resources and Business Technology staff to ensure accessibility considerations across the Association. The ideal candidate will have strong technical expertise, a desire to learn and teach, and a desire to support culture changes so that the way we develop and deliver digital tools includes accessibility considerations.

Responsibilities

Provide expert accessibility feedback and mentoring in areas of design (UX/UI), development, and testing to American Heart Association teams on new systems, features, and functions; recommending solutions to achieve or maintain compliance while crafting accessible digital products for an excellent customer experience.

Assess internal and third-party applications to identify accessibility issues. Complete and deliver reports and documentation of assessments and participate in follow-up communications. Work with third-party vendors to identify remediation plans acceptable to the American Heart Association. Connect with internal staff and external parties any failures to comply with guidelines; and negotiate cost-effective remediation initiatives with third-party vendors.

Be the subject matter expert for WCAG guidelines and stay informed of the guidelines as they evolve. Help to develop a plan for transitioning to new guidelines when they are updated. Monitor the accessibility industry and leaders in the field.

Support needed materials and training of internal BT and business users on accessibility guidelines and standards. Partner with groups across the Association to share best practices for digital accessibility and help to develop protocols to improve internal process that support accessibility for end users.

Help accountable staff (BT, business or legal) interpret accessibility reports and required next steps.

Compile and report current enterprise accessibility compliance status, progress, and risks to management.

Use development and technical skills to go into code and documents to resolve accessibility barriers.

Qualifications

Bachelors Degree

5 years of relevant work experience

Experience in front-end development including coding in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and other frameworks used for rich interface programming, as well as hands-on experience with Assistive Technology (screen readers, magnifiers, alternative input, etc.)

Solid understanding of WCAG and WAI-ARIA.

Experience in manual and functional testing as well as manual testing using JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, or similar tools.

Experience driving accessibility improvements on a software development or technology team.

Understanding of responsive design and mobile native applications as they relate to accessibility.

Experience evaluating the conformance of web content against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines using axe DevTools, WAVE, Accessibility Insights, or similar tools.

Experience remediating PDFs and other document formats and awareness of appropriate document structure.

High degree of initiative and autonomy coupled with an ability to function optimally as part of a team (in person and virtual). Flexibility and adaptability – able to react and quickly change direction based on stakeholder or management need.

Ability to mentor others in methods and techniques for ensuring digital accessibility in a variety of forums

Outstanding communications and interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on collaboration, influencing and mentoring.

Customer centric and empathetic to the customer, with the ability to put oneself in their shoes.

Written and verbal communication skills – able to present status, facts, thoughts, and ideas in a clear, concise, convincing, and organized manner with internal and external stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

IAAP or other certification or membership

Strong organizational and documentation skills

Experience working in an agile environment

Experience collaborating with offshore and geographically dispersed resources

Experience with usability and accessibility research
