WHAT'S THE ROLE?

An Accessibility (A11y) Designer at Northwestern Mutual has a passion for simplicity and design that makes a difference in people's lives. They are hands-on, innovative, and excited to see a project through from start to finish, in a collaborative fashion.

We are leading a major digital transformation and our A11y Designers can expect to play a critical part. An ideal candidate should be a fierce advocate for inclusive design. Their work should strive to achieve core business objectives and set industry standards. They should be passionate about the work we are doing and always striving to push our vision forward.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:

Advising Product, Design, and Engineering teams (iOS, Android and Web) to the best accessibility practices and accessibility-related decisions.
Translating requirements and synthesize user research into useful, useable, elegant, and accessible solutions.
Assist in the development of continuing education on inclusive design practices, accessibility guidelines, and industry standards.
Contribute to process refinement and provide a11y perspectives in design thinking.
Be a conceptual thinker and always explore multiple directions before landing on a solution.
Collaborate with all disciplines of design, product, and engineering to bring the work to life.
Ability to handle more than one project with different timelines simultaneously and be able to represent their work.
Conduct accessibility testing with assistive technologies.

BRING YOUR BEST! WHAT THIS ROLE NEEDS:

Demonstrate how you measure achieving compliance with WCAG, Section 508 Guidelines, and current practices in inclusive design.
Significant knowledge of UX fundamentals: user-centered design process, product research, usability heuristics, graphic design, information architecture, interaction design, and experience design
Work independently and are a self-starter who is user-focused, detail- and solutions-oriented.
Create systematic designs.
Clearly articulate design decisions in written and oral form.
Proficiency in a variety of design and prototyping tools (Sketch, Figma, and InVision)
Proficiency in a variety of a11y testing tools and assistive technologies.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Industry A11y certification(s) (Eg. IAAP CPACC, WAS, CPWA)

This job is not covered by the existing Collective Bargaining Agreement.
