Accessibility is a key part of Microsoft’s mission to empower people and organizations to achieve more, and our team partners across the company to make that vision a reality for the more than one billion people with disabilities. As part of this focus, we are looking for a high-performing engineer with a passion for technology evangelism, with background and experience working with customers and partners building accessible AI experiences end-to-end. This includes defining and building cloud solutions, application development, and deployment, particularly with Microsoft’s cloud solutions in data science and machine learning. Candidates must have a proven track record in software engineering, excellent communication skills and attention to detail, as well as partnering with a wide variety of stakeholder groups, internal and external, on technology innovation projects on a global scale.

Internal innovation projects will be sourced from a variety of pipelines, such as hackathons and product teams looking for acceleration on short-term deliverables. The Accessibility Integration Engineer will be responsible for prioritizing projects on a monthly sprint cycle, executing on committed deliverables, and reporting progress regularly to executive stakeholders. To ensure quality of work in fields as vast as AI and accessibility, the Accessibility Integration Engineer will need to amplify their individual skills and experience by leveraging partner teams across the company, such as data scientists, data engineers, cloud architects, etc., and will build long-term, trusted relationships with those partner teams.

External projects will be sourced from the Microsoft AI for Accessibility program. The Accessibility Integration Engineer will help vet the technical feasibility for applicants to the program and deliver development work for high value strategic investments. The person in this role will help grantees of the program onboard to the Azure platform, host their datasets, package models as API’s, and maintain the program’s integrity around ethical data collection and use.

Responsibilities

Execute on committed deliverables for prioritized accessibility innovation projects related to Microsoft’s own products and services.
Help vet the technical feasibility for applicants to the AI for Accessibility program and deliver development work for high value strategic investments.
Build long-term, trusted relationships with technical partner teams within Microsoft to evangelize goals of our accessibility innovation efforts and leverage unique engineering and data science skills from colleagues, when needed.
Support the program’s goals for scalable AI architecture, ethical data collection, and model/API generation.
Evangelize the capabilities of Azure and accessible app development internally and externally.
Create industry-focused technical content, videos, and demos - showcasing architecture and best practices to address technical challenges, targeting beginner to advanced content
Develop mechanisms to drive technical feedback and change from customer to product team, to scale across Microsoft solutions and services.

Qualifications

3+ years of experience working on AI and Azure stack, consumer/enterprise product(s) or experience working in software industry experience, preferably driving large software engineering products in both leadership and IC roles
4+ years of experience as a software developer
3+ years Accessibility experience on both consumer/enterprise products and assistive technologies, such as screen readers, switches and other accessible technologies preferred.
Previous experience launching initiatives from general directional goals to successful operations delivering and exceeding expectations
Knowledge of accessibility guidelines (such as Section 508 and WCAG 2.0) and technologies (such as ARIA)
Hands-on coding experience with open source platforms
Ability to communicate effectively to a variety of audiences, from project coordinators, to developers, data scientists, and senior executives.
Experience in public speaking, technical writing, social media, and blogging preferred.
Demonstrated ability to work independently with high impact results.
B.S. in Computer Science, including ability to code in one or more languages, Accessibility, technical consulting, solution design, project envisioning, plan deployment, and leadership
