What's the role?

Etsy is seeking an Engineering Manager for the Accessibility team. The successful candidate will manage a team of engineers focused on accessibility at the intersection of design, product, and engineering. They will be responsible for the stewardship of accessibility in our web and mobile native products in addition to our design system.

What's the day-to-day look like?

Team Mentorship – You'll coach the engineers on your team, providing both project feedback and career guidance, and creating opportunities for your team members to grow.

Hiring – You'll partner with our recruiting team to find, attract, interview, and hire new engineers for your team, across platforms (web, iOS, Android) — these will be highly specialized engineers at all levels with a passion and focus on accessibility.

Cross-Team Leadership – You'll work with your peers in Engineering, Product Design, Product Management, User Research, and more to determine a shared vision and roadmap for Accessibility.

Stewardship of Quality - You'll work with your team and the broader engineering organization to oversee and act as an advocate of user-centered thinking and accessibility throughout our products—aiming to guide, influence, and improve future accessibility through systems. You’ll also uphold technical craft through the work your team does to ensure a robust, thoughtful infrastructure for our engineering org to build accessible products on top of.

Accessibility & Technical Strategy - You'll contribute to the strategy of our future accessibility work, ensuring that it's focused on making an impact on our products and built-in a robust, maintainable, adaptable way.

Collaboration with Design Systems- You'll work together with Design Systems design manager and engineering manager counterpart to ensure that there's alignment and quality between your team and theirs.

Advocacy – You’ll advocate for accessibility within the company, and within the Engineering organization to both expand the company and team’s accessibility impact and efforts.


Qualifications


Qualities that will help you thrive in this role:

You've built amazing, diverse, impactful accessibility engineering teams before.
You know what inspired teams look like and how to build and shape them.
You have a vision for accessibility and inclusive engineering thinking.
Experience managing a team and coaching team members as they grow their careers
Ability to promote and share the importance of accessibility
Understanding the overlap between usability and accessibility
Familiarity with one or more accessibility standards, principles, techniques and best practices (including WCAG 2.1, Revised Sec 508, WAI-ARIA, ATAG)
Familiarity with modern JavaScript libraries and tooling (e.g. React)
Ability to think outside of the box and be innovative when it comes to scaling solutions to complex accessibility problems.
Passion for building and helping others build accessible UIs
Commitment to meeting high expectations of end-users
Experience with Agile/Scrum practices.
Strong communication/presentation skills are needed to represent your team with stakeholders and management.

Nice to Have

Familiarity with open source a11y tools and rulesets (e.g. axe-core)
Familiarity with WCAG 2.1 success criteria mapping to development requirements for Web, iOS and Android applications
