Web Developer for Accessibility Remediation

University of California, Berkeley

Berkeley, CA,USA

This job is expired.

UC Berkeley will soon launch a three-year Accessibility Project that will ensure our websites and videos are accessible to people with disabilities. The project has been established in collaboration between Berkeley IT, and the Office of Disability Access and Compliance. The Applications Programmer 4 for the Accessibility Project will join a new and unique team within Berkeley Information Technology, and is responsible for assessing and remediating web sites and web applications that have accessibility issues. The goal of the project is to enhance UC Berkeley’s approach to accessibility compliance with the following primary targets:

The top 200 most visited, public facing websites;
Poor or absent captioning on websites;
Awareness and Prevention Campaign.

The team for the Accessibility Project is a highly collaborative team across Berkeley IT, Disability Access and Compliance, and many key stakeholders on campus. The position involves the development and refactoring of server and mobile applications, and web sites and web applications to improve accessibility of such widely used web sites and applications. The programmer regularly researches, designs, and develops specifications for designing, writing, modifying, testing, debugging, troubleshooting and maintaining source code using Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP (LAMP), ASP.NET, or other stacks that make up existing systems. In particular, the programmer is comfortable developing for widely used content management systems such as Drupal or WordPress. The position may have involvement in the use of databases, user interfaces, and content or multimedia processes. Work includes analysis and design to post-production processes, quality assurance to verify accessibility status after remediation, and documentation to ensure the functional owner can maintain the level of accessibility reached after remediation.

This is a critical position to the success of the Accessibility Project, and in keeping with the core values of Berkeley IT:

We champion diversity. We believe that differences in experience, perspective, and identity enliven and enrich our work, strengthen our solutions and services, and uphold our commitment to access and opportunity for all. We treat each other with respect and actively recognize each other for contributions towards creating a positive, inclusive work environment.

We act with integrity. We are honest, open, and transparent. We strive to do what is right for each other and the communities we serve. Our actions reflect a high ethical standard and commitment to equity.

We deliver. We take responsibility for our work and honor our commitments to each other, our customers and our organization by delivering high-quality, timely service.

We innovate. We conceive new ways of doing things by listening to others’ ideas, remaining open-minded, fostering creative solutions, pushing our limits, and continually improving our processes.
