Digital Accessibility and Usability Intern (REMOTE)

Department Overview

Local Customer Experience Team is focused on customer resiliency, rebuilding and revitalizing the communities we serve, while also eliminating risk for our customers, particularly our most vulnerable customers.

A critical focus of the Local Customer Experience Team is timely, accurate, and accessible information during a Public Safety Power Shutoff events, storms, and other major disasters. It’s even more important for PG&E customers who depend on power to operate their medical equipment to ensure their daily living needs are met. Other vulnerable customers include our low-income and senior customers.

Customers with disabilities and aging populations access information from PG&E in a variety of methods and sources. Hiring a Summer Intern with a Computer Science or related field who has a vision disability and uses assistive technology and who can be integrated into PG&E’s IT and Digital Strategy web development, review, and testing workstreams will help identify unmet needs from a digital perspective for these populations. The Summer Intern, a daily user of JAWS or NVDA screen reader, will be able to provide insights from a “user” and usability perspective that can add value to these critical customer channels.

Position Summary

The Information Technology (IT) organization designs, develops, operates and maintains the technology and telecommunications systems that enable PG&E to meet its commitment to providing safe, reliable and affordable service to customers.

IT supports the business by improving service quality, increasing capabilities through the development of additional functionality, implementing new technologies, reducing costs, increasing productivity, and facilitating organizational and business effectiveness through enabling technologies. Key groups within the IT organization that this position can support is Products & Enterprise Platforms, Application and Infrastructure Services, Enterprise Strategy and Architecture, and the IT Program Office.
This position will also support the Digital Strategy Team. Customer expectations and market forces are driving PG&E to be more heavily focused on the customer’s digital experience. The Summer Intern will also assist in reviewing web pages, content, customer tools, and PDF files for accessibility.

The Local Customer Experience Team, IT, and Digital Strategy is looking for a talented Summer Intern to help support IT and Digital Strategy in the following initiatives and workstreams:
•Participate in website testing, troubleshooting, and analysis on the development of website accessibility compliance and support the development, implementation, and maintenance of test processes and diagnostic programs.
•Participate in automated testing and other platforms.
•Review publisher drafts on new or revised pages before being published on website
•Review PDF accessibility to determine if remediation is required.
•Provide ongoing remediation guidance and defect mitigation feedback as a screen reader user and troubleshoot accessibility issues with web and testing development teams.
•Ensure compliance, ease, efficiency, and effectiveness as a NVDA/JAWS screen reader end user and customers who use assistive technology.
•Partner with other departments to ensure consistency and quality across the platform.

The successful intern will have the opportunity to support activities as described above working with a team of experienced IT web developers, web content managers, UX Designers, third party web testing consultants, and customer web delivery teams.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
•Earning a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science or related field.
•User of Assistive Technology: Nonvisual Desktop Access (NVDA) or Job Access with Speech (JAWS)

Desired:
•3.0 GPA or greater in both cumulative GPA and major GPA
•Awareness / knowledge of Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC)
•General understanding of IT testing process and procedures
•General understanding of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and Section 508 Federal Requirements using the following methodologies: screen reader reviews, keyboard testing, and code reviews
•Knowledge of user-centered design principles and tools
•Familiarity with Agile development practices
•General understanding of JavaScript, HTML, and CSS
•Knowledge of how to incorporate accessible features in web applications and/or mobile applications using JavaScript, HTML, and CSS
•Ability to provide implementation directions and requirements for UX Design and Front-End Development teams
•Knowledge regarding how to analyze PDFs for accessibility
•Strong organization and multi-tasking skills
•Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
•Takes initiative and can work independently with minimal direction

Salary Range: $17 - $34
