Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The Office of Marketing & Communications seeks a Quality Assurance Specialist who will validate digital products for best practices and standards. In addition, the role will ensure industry-standard user experience, WCAG 2.1 AA compliance, and content validation. Finally, this person will conduct final checks of code and content using approved tools, including screen readers and manual testing, to verify websites meet university accessibility standards.
The Quality Assurance Specialist will also plan and conduct usability testing to provide insights into behaviors and operability of the University of Maryland’s websites. The Specialist will also have hands-on development experience with the ability to jump into content management systems and provide support to the development team.
Education (include licenses, certifications, etc.):
Bachelor’s degree required
Minimum of five years of quality assurance experience with at least two years of experience performing accessibility audits with screen reader software.
Minimum of four years of experience with content management systems.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledgeable about the guidelines defined by WCAG 2.1, Section 508, and other accessibility standards.
Demonstrated knowledge of web application performance best practices for high-traffic websites.
Ability to create and maintain training documentation.
Experience with screen reader software: JAWS, NVDA, TalkBack, VoiceOver, etc.
Experience with productivity or tracking software such as Jira, Tello, Backlog, etc.
Astute critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Empathy for people with accessibility needs and an understanding of the different perspectives and needs of people.
Experience with content management systems such as CraftCMS or Drupal.
Expert in WCAG 2.1 AA standards and aria-* usage.
Experience with HTML and CSS
Experience with SiteImprove compliance software and WAVE
Experience testing Single Page Applications.
