About the job:
The Humanitarian Services Digital Product team aspires to create inclusive and accessible digital experiences for our workforce and clients while also ensuring our digital products support successful mission delivery. We take a holistic view toward inclusion to include not only the digital user experience but also data models, digital identity, and digital content. As a Digital Accessibility Specialist, you will apply your subject matter expertise on digital accessibility standards and best practices, as well as inclusive design and user experience (UX) research to collaborate with product teams throughout the development lifecycle.

Our products support our humanitarian mission in a variety of ways including delivering financial assistance to those impacted by disasters, visualizing situational awareness for disaster response and logistics operations, and onboarding and assignment of new volunteers to critical mission roles. You'll work closely with product managers, developers, business stakeholders, and volunteers throughout the product development and operational lifecycle. Typical activities include user experience research, accessibility testing, remediation, and implementing and sharing best practices.

The work location for this exciting opportunity is virtual. The selected candidate will work 100% remotely from home with a preference to be located in the Eastern or Central time zones.

What you will be doing:

Assessment & Testing: Use a range of automated and manual testing capabilities as well as product analytics to identify accessibility and inclusion issues. Propose and implement solutions to address and improve digital accessibility and inclusion. Assess new technologies under consideration for accessibility compliance.


User Experience UX Research: Using human-centered design thinking methods, such as journey mapping, discover user needs and barriers to access and inclusion across application interfaces, digital content, data, and digital identity domains. Working with product design teams, translate UX research findings into actionable outputs.


Product Design Sprints: Collaborate with agile product teams to build accessibility into all areas of the development (e.g., research, design, development, testing, operations)
Contribute to user story development and accessibility acceptance criteria.


Coach product, technology, and content teams in designing and developing for accessibility and inclusion


Develop and maintain digital accessibility best practice training and documentation to expand adoption across Red Cross product, technology, and content teams.


Reporting on quantifiable improvements to accessibility and inclusion to support DEI outcomes


Scope: Individual contributor that works under limited supervision. Apply subject matter knowledge. Capacity to understand specific needs or requirements to apply skills/knowledge.

Qualified candidates must be authorized to work in the United States. The American Red Cross does not sponsor employment visas.

What we need from you:

Bachelors degree or combination of education and equivalent experience.
4+ years of experience with: digital accessibility testing and improvement for software, websites, digital content; UX design and/or testing; inclusive design
Proficiency with common accessibility testing software (e.g. AxePro, SiteImprove, WAVE, AMP, etc.), device emulators, and assistive technology (e.g. JAWS, VoiceOver, NVDA, etc.) and devices (e.g. screen readers, alternative inputs, etc.)
Experience creating test plans, test scripts, test automation
Expertise with web accessibility standards and regulations (e.g. W3C WCAG 2.1 AA, WAI-ARIA, ADA, Section 508, and the Twenty-First Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act)


Preferred Qualifications/Experience:

Certification in UX / UI design, research
Familiarity with Agile methodologies, JIRA, and Confluence
Experience developing and delivering online training and documentation for accessibility or inclusive design best practices for different audiences (e.g. developers, system administrators, business analysts, content creators, etc.)

The legal stuff:
Essential Functions/Physical Requirements: Depending on work assignment, may require ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; or the ability to stand, walk and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of up to 20 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read technical information. Overall mobility is essential. May include sitting for long periods of time, driving a vehicle and working under challenging conditions.

Work Conditions: Work is performed indoors with some potential for exposure to safety and health hazards related to emergency services relief work. May travel and participate in meetings and conferences throughout chapter jurisdiction, state and Red Cross system. Because the Red Cross is a disaster response organization, staff may be asked to be on 24-hour call during period of major disaster.

What's in it for you:
For those candidates located in Colorado or Connecticut, the annual salary range for this position is $82K+. We do not offer an annual bonus for this role. Note that the American Red Cross sets salary ranges aligned to a specific geographic location in which the job or employee resides. The stated salary range in this posting is an average and may not be reflective of your individual circumstances. We will review specific salary information at the time of phone screening based upon your location.
