The Center for Assistive Technology ( CAT ) at the University at Buffalo seeks an Assistive Technology Evaluator and Instructor. CAT explores the functional utility of Assistive Technology (AT) devices and services in support of persons with disabilities.

Our client service programs deliver assessment, training, demonstration, and loan services to facilitate computer and environmental access in the context of school, work and independent living goals. Activities integrate multiple disciplines and span economic sectors to improve the quality of life for persons with any level of impairment, across all ages and within any environment.

For this position, employee will provide assistive technology evaluations and trainings for children and adults with disabilities including those who are blind, have vision impairments, mobility impairments, cognitive impairments, and other types of disabilities. Training is provided in the use of a wide range of assistive technologies that include screen reading and magnification software, text to speech, speech recognition, notetaking devices, organization and time management devices, scanning and materials accessibility, scanning devices and use of switches. Conduct on-site evaluations, installations, and training as needed. Provide technical support in the use of multiple assistive technologies.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Literacy in Windows, Apple, and Chrome operating systems, and productivity software such as Microsoft Office.
Strong interpersonal skills with all age groups and cultures.


Preferred Qualifications

Degree in rehabilitation, a disability-related field, education or assistive technology or equivalent work experience in the area of assistive technology for persons with disabilities at an educational or vocational setting, or assistive technology center.
Assistive technology service provision experience and/or Rehabilitation Engineering Society of North America Assistive Technology Professional Certification
Experience working with the following assistive technology software and devices:
Screen reading and magnification software (JAWS, ZoomText, Fusion, VoiceOver)
Alternative computer access
Work with alternative formats and accessible documents


Physical Demands
Must be able to lift and carry minimum of 10 lbs to move client equipment and various assistive technology devices as needed. Must be able to squat and bend in order to setup equipment at client and Center workstations. Must be able to drive personal vehicle (with mileage reimbursement at New York state rate) to travel to client worksites in Western New York and surrounding counties.

Salary Range
$37,000 - $52,000
