The Office of Student Accommodations at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a remote Digital Accessibility Program Director.

About The OpportunityThe Digital Accessibility Program Director is responsible for advancing the institution’s commitment to an inclusive digital environment by ensuring that websites, applications, instructional content, and electronic information technologies (EIT) are accessible to all users, including individuals with disabilities. The role combines compliance oversight, technical expertise, training, consultation, and coordination with stakeholders across the university to align with WCAG 2.1/2.2 AA standards, ADA, Section 504, Section 508, and other applicable regulations.

This position reports to the Director of the Office of Student Accommodations and works collaboratively with IT services, faculty, procurement, academic departments, third-party vendors, and other stakeholders to evaluate digital accessibility, remediate barriers, and promote best practices in accessible design, procurement, and content creation.

Wellness programs

What You'll DoLeadership & Compliance Oversight

Lead the development, updating, and enforcement of institutional accessibility standards and the campus accessibility plan.
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and institutional accessibility regulations.
Chair accessibility committees and represent the institution in system-level and professional accessibility groups.
Establish processes for exceptions and alternative access when compliance cannot be fully achieved.

Accessibility Audits & Technical Consultation

Conduct in-depth audits of websites, applications, documents, and multimedia for WCAG 2.1/2.2 AA compliance.
Provide clear, actionable reports and remediation recommendations.
Support remediation efforts by consulting with developers, designers, faculty, and staff.
Use automated and manual testing tools (e.g. screen readers) and other assistive technologies to evaluate the accessibility of course content and educational materials.

Training & Capacity Building

Design and deliver training programs, workshops, and resources for faculty, staff, and content creators.
Maintain accessible templates, FAQs, checklists, and toolkits for institutional use.
Track training participation and support faculty in applying accessibility principles (including UDL).

Procurement & Vendor Engagement

Review VPATs, ACRs, HECVATs, and related documentation for third-party tools and platforms. Develop access strategies when technologies have identified accessibility barriers.
Integrate accessibility requirements into procurement processes and contracts.
Collaborate with vendors to remediate accessibility barriers and ensure ongoing compliance.
Consult with instructors and faculty concerning accessibility of course content.

Collaboration & Campus Engagement

Partner with Office of Student Accommodations, IT, Procurement, Academic Affairs, and other units to promote consistent accessibility practices. Work with stakeholders to ensure procurement processes include evaluation of accessibility.
Participate in cross-functional working groups and support institutional accessibility initiatives.
Serve as a subject matter expert to internal and external stakeholders.
Regularly solicit student feedback about EIT accessibility barriers.

Bachelor’s degree in IT, Computer Science, UX/UI Design, Accessibility Studies, Instructional Design, or related field
A minimum of four (4) years of experience involving:

Compliance oversight, technology accessibility evaluation, and accessibility compliance documentation (VPATs, ACRs, HECVATs)
Proficiency with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and accessibility evaluation tools

Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Demonstrated experience with both compliance oversight and technology accessibility evaluation.
Strong knowledge of WCAG 2.1 AA, ADA, Section 504/508, and related accessibility standards and regulations.
Proficiency with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and accessibility evaluation tools (e.g., WAVE, Axe, Siteimprove, JAWS, NVDA).
Experience in reviewing accessibility compliance documentation (VPATs, ACRs, HECVATs).
Excellent communication and collaboration skills across technical and non-technical audiences.
Strong project management and organizational skills.
