Accessibility Engineer

The BCE Accessibility PMO seeks a strategic and technically fluent Accessibility Engineer to lead the organization’s Shift Left Accessibility initiative. This role pioneers the integration of accessibility practices into SDLC, infusing automated scanning and inclusive standards across web and mobile development cycles. You’ll drive policy, tooling, process redesign, and vendor collaboration to accelerate enterprise accessibility maturity delivering impact from ideation to release.

Key Responsibilities
Audit Bell’s digital products to ensure accessibility compliance and conformance with WCAG 2.1 (and latest version), AODA, Section 508, and AMA standards.
Execute accessibility test plans and scenarios, including testing with various assistive technologies like screen readers (JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, TalkBack), screen magnifiers, and speech recognition software.
Perform automated accessibility assessments using tools like Siteimprove, WAVE, AXE, AChecker and so on. Also perform additional assessments for Color code compliance using Color Contrast Analyzer (CCA).
Identify accessibility barriers, document issues, and collaborate with development teams to implement effective solutions.
Conduct code reviews with a focus on HTML5, JavaScript, CSS3, and jQuery to identify accessibility barriers related to code/page structure.
Collaborate closely with Product Owners, Managers, designers, and developers to implement inclusive design practices and accessible code solutions.
Provide expert guidance and support on accessibility best practices, inclusive design principles, and remediation strategies for identified issues for accessibility for web and mobile content.
Develop, document, and implement internal accessibility policies, processes, and frameworks aligned with BCE’s SDLC.
Provide training and mentorship to delivery teams on accessibility best practices and inclusive development techniques.
Maintain awareness of industry tools and trends, including platforms from Level Access and Deque.

Required Qualifications
5+ years of professional experience.
Proficient in working with assistive technologies like JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, Talkback, Speech recognition software.
Strong knowledge of HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, and jQuery
Hands-on experience using accessibility testing tools and browser plugins like WAVE, AXE, AChecker, Siteimprove and so on.
Expertise with WCAG 2.1 (and latest version), AODA, AMA and Section 508 standards
Strong understanding of colour contrast, usability, and responsive design
Ability to identify accessibility gaps and propose technical and UX solutions
Good communication and collaboration skills
Certifications in accessibility (e.g., CPACC, WAS, Trusted tester)
Experience with Agile development methodologies.
Experience with mobile accessibility and responsive design testing.
