**Academic Accessibility Compliance Specialist – Higher Ed (Remote)**

**USA – Remote**

**Pay $19/hr (Weekly + benefits)**

**6-month contract (Potential for extension)**

**Full-time: M–F, 8am–5pm (your time zone)**

****Please note: Must have experience working in Higher Education – either as an Accessibility Specialist, Compliance professional, Web Designer in higher education, and/or Special Education teacher.**

**Position Overview:**

The Academic Accessibility Specialist is a role responsible for supporting the university’s curricular accessibility and compliance initiatives. Reporting to the Manager of Academic Quality Services, this position provides subject-matter expertise in accessibility standards, copyright compliance, and usability testing for online course content. The Academic Accessibility Specialist reviews and evaluates course learning materials, multimedia assets, documents, and digital interfaces to ensure compliance with established accessibility standards and regulations, including WCAG 2.2, Section 508, WAI-ARIA, UAAG, and ATAG. This role also provides actionable recommendations and remediation support to ensure accessible, high-quality academic content.

**Essential Job Functions**

• Review internal and external course materials—including videos, PDFs, documents, and websites—for compliance with WCAG 2.2 accessibility standards

• Evaluate online course content for usability and accessibility across multiple platforms and learning environments

• Remediate and/or create accurate transcripts and captions for video content in accordance with copyright permissions, WCAG standards, and ADA requirements

• Remediate PDF and document-based materials to ensure accessibility, proper tagging, structure, and navigation

• Review interface design and instructional content for accessibility, usability, and compliance with copyright and regulatory guidelines

• Conduct accessibility testing using assistive technologies (e.g., NVDA) and clearly document findings

• Identify accessibility gaps and provide clear remediation recommendations to stakeholders and content owners

• Ensure academic documents meet accessibility, formatting, and usability standards prior to publication

• Maintain documentation and reporting related to accessibility reviews, findings, and remediation efforts

• Collaborate with internal teams to support continuous improvement in accessibility practices and standards

**Required Qualifications**

• Bachelor’s degree required

• 2+ years of experience in Higher Education, either as an Accessibility Specialist, Compliance professional, Web Designer in higher education, and/or Special Education teacher

• Must have advanced experience with Microsoft Word features such as styles, references, tables of contents, lists of figures and tables, footnotes, header and footer options, and page layout functions

• Excellent experience remediating PDFs to ensure accessibility

• Must have experience using Adobe Acrobat Pro

• Experience reviewing backlog courses, including watching internal and external videos to assess grammar, and reviewing transcripts for punctuation and sentence structure

• Basic knowledge of WCAG 2.0, Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, WAI-ARIA, UAAG, and ATAG

• Some experience with assistive technologies such as NVDA (screen reader tools) or similar

• Bonus: Certification in technology accessibility, education access, or web accessibility
