Job Description
Position: Accessibility Remediation Specialist, Ivey Publishing Location: In-office, London, Ontario Position Type: Full time, temporary (4 months, May 1 to August 31, 2026) Business School Foundations Contract with an anticipated start date of May 2026. Status: This posting is for a new temporary position. Hiring Range: $20/hour Available Positions: 2 Position Overview Ivey Publishing is updating its content library to meet international digital accessibility standards, including WCAG 2.1 Level AA and PDF/UA. We are looking for two detail-oriented, self-directed individuals to audit existing PDF documents for accessibility issues and remediate them to bring them into full compliance. You will be given a clear priority list and a defined process. This is precise, hands-on work that is well suited to someone early in their career or currently completing a degree. We need people who can follow a process carefully, work through problems on their own, and maintain quality and consistency across a high volume of documents. Key Responsibilities - PDF Auditing: Review existing PDF documents against WCAG 2.1 Level AA and PDF/UA standards and document findings clearly and consistently. - PDF Remediation: Fix identified accessibility issues including document tagging, reading order, heading structure, table markup, list structure, form fields, links, and metadata; this includes working in both Adobe Acrobat Pro and original Microsoft Word source files. - Alt Text: Apply accurate and descriptive alt text to images and figures; AI assisted prompts will be provided to support this process. - Tool Use: Work with Adobe Acrobat Pro and PAC (PDF Accessibility Checker) for auditing and verification; training on CommonLook will be provided. - Quality Assurance: Verify all remediated documents meet the required compliance standard before marking complete and maintain accurate records of document status and issues resolved. Education and Experience - A background in information science, library science, communications, publishing, English, or digital media is an asset; individuals from any background with an interest in digital accessibility and strong attention to detail are encouraged to apply. - Some familiarity with accessibility standards including WCAG 2.1 AA and PDF/UA and what makes a document non-compliant (heading structure, alt text, reading order, colour contrast, table headers, metadata) is preferred. - An understanding of assistive technologies such as screen readers and how users with disabilities navigate documents is an asset. - Strong proficiency in Microsoft Word and Office Suite is required; hands-on experience with Adobe Acrobat Pro is an asset. Skills and Competencies - Accessibility Standards Knowledge: Working familiarity with WCAG 2.1 AA and PDF/UA requirements including tagging, reading order, alt text, colour contrast, heading structure, document metadata, and how assistive technologies interact with PDF documents. - Document Structure and Coding: Understanding of document structure including Microsoft Word styles, HTML, or XML is a strong asset for understanding and applying PDF tagging requirements accurately. - Tool Proficiency: Comfortable using Adobe Acrobat Pro for accessibility auditing and remediation; quick to learn new tools and processes. - Attention to Detail: Methodical consistent quality. - Self-Directed: Comfortable working independently through a defined task list and able to work through problems before escalating. - Professionalism: Reliable, punctual, and comfortable working independently in a professional office setting.
