Job Description
Our team is passionate about providing Assistive Technology services to children and adults who are blind or low vision. We are seeking an Assistive Technology Specialist to join the team. DBVI is seeking an Assistive Technology Specialist to join the team. The successful candidate will work closely with schools, families, and other blindness rehabilitation professionals and requires strong interpersonal, organizational, and collaborative skills. This is a Limited Period Position and can be located out of any of our regional offices, statewide. The Assistive Technology Specialist: * Assesses assistive technology needs using standardized methods and interprets relevant vision and medical information to recommend appropriate solutions that support independence in education, employment, and daily living. * Provides direct instruction in assistive technology, including screen readers, magnification, braille displays, and mobile accessibility tools, and develops individualized training plans tailored to client needs. * Configures, installs, and supports assistive technology devices and software, and creates accessible materials to ensure effective and compliant access. * Collaborates with clients, families, educators, and service providers to coordinate services, provide training, and support successful integration of assistive technology. * Maintains accurate documentation of assessments, services, and progress, and stays current with emerging technologies and accessibility best practices. Qualifications & Skills Technical & Assistive Technology Skills • Proficiency with screen readers (JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, TalkBack) and magnification tools • Experience with braille displays, OCR tools, and mobile accessibility features • Knowledge of accessible software (Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, web navigation, OS accessibility settings) • Ability to troubleshoot assistive technology devices, software, and connectivity issues Instructional Skills • Ability to teach assistive technology using clear, adaptable methods • Experience developing individualized training plans based on client needs • Patience and flexibility with diverse learning styles and abilities Accessibility & Disability Knowledge • Understanding of blindness and low vision functional needs • Knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG, keyboard navigation, alt text) and accommodations (ADA, Section 508) Communication & Collaboration • Strong communication and interpersonal skills • Ability to work with clients, families, educators, and interdisciplinary teams • Ability to support individuals adjusting to vision loss Organizational Skills • Ability to manage multiple clients and maintain accurate documentation • Experience delivering services in person and/or remotely Problem-Solving & Adaptability • Creative approach to accessibility challenges • Ability to quickly learn and apply new technologies Minimum Qualifications Advanced education, training, and/or experience in blind or low vision rehabilitation services spanning disciplines such as orientation & mobility, assistive technology and occupational therapy, or other related fields concerning accessibility and disability with demonstrated competency in disability assessment, technological solutions, instructional methods, problem solving, and communication. Ability to obtain Certified Assistive Technology Instructional Specialist (CATIS) within six months of hire. Preferences Preference will be given to candidates who hold certification as a Certified Assistive Technology Instructional Specialist.
