Our mission makes AIDB a unique place to work. **ABOUT THE ROLE** The Assistive Technology Trainer’s primary location for this position will be in the Birmingham Regional Center but will travel to the Tuscaloosa Regional Center on a set schedule based upon need. Assistive Technology Trainers provide training, both locally and via various distance learning technologies, to individuals and groups across Alabama. They will be responsible for curriculum development and progress tracking. These people must have a passion for working with students, staff, parents, and community partners. From assessment to goal achievement, these people will document services in a timely manner. Communication with students, staff, and our partner organizations is a vital part of these positions with strong writing, speaking, and public relations skills required. The ideal candidate will possess a love for students with vision loss and will do whatever is necessary to provide limitless opportunities for our students. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS - Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. **PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS** - Post-secondary training in one of the following fields: Assistive Technology, Computer Science, Computer Technology, and Technology Training, or related field. - Experience in teaching/training in group and one-on-one settings. - Knowledge of Assistive Technology, including a background in using CCTVs, screen magnifiers, screen readers, Braille translation software, and OCR software. - Preference will be given to persons with background and work experiences with assistive devices for the Blind, DeafBlind, and physically-challenged. **POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES** **Training & Instruction** - **Direct Training:** Provide individualized and group assistive technology instruction to consumers. - **Curriculum Development:** Responsible for the creation and implementation of training curricula. - **Specialized Support:** Assist with training specifically designed for individuals who are blind or have low vision. - **Technology Mastery:** Utilize large print Assistive Technology software and various hardware devices. - **Methodological Application:** Demonstrate a willingness to learn and understand methodologies used to educate individuals with vision loss. **Performance & Technical Skills** - **Software Expertise:** Maintain expertise in Microsoft Office Suite and Google G-Suite. - **Effective Communication:** Utilize effective communication skills to interact with students, staff, and partners. - **Public Relations:** Maintain strong writing, speaking, and interpersonal skills when communicating with partner organizations. - **Documentation:** Adhere to established documentation procedures and accurately record student progress and outcomes. - **System Knowledge:** Use Microsoft operating systems and Microsoft Office software effectively. **Physical & Scheduling Requirements** - **Operational Flexibility:** Ability and willingness to travel between work locations. - **Initial Training:** Must spend up to six weeks in Talladega for initial training. **Professional Development and Certifications** - **Braille Proficiency:** Demonstrate competency in reading and writing Braille by scoring 80% or better on the AIDB Braille Skills Assessment within the first twenty-four (24) months. - **Specialized Training:** Complete Basics of Blindness and Low Vision / Deaf 101 e-Learning course and Orientation and Mobility Certification within the first 12 months. Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB.
