ACCESSIBILITY DEVELOPER

You will be the first point of contact and design authority for ensuring delivery of accessible web application, an ambassador for accessibility and assistive technologies within Oleeo, maintaining your expertise in Accessibility Standards (including updates to WCAG), Assistive Technologies (such as using new versions or features in JAWS), and best coding practice for implementing accessible solutions.


You will be required to significantly contribute to coding solutions and will take full responsibility for coding HTML, CSS and will contribute to Javascript development but you will be supported by a team of experienced front end developers. The role includes reviewing Accessibility Audit Reports that have been compiled by independent third parties and being prepared to discuss the findings and give solutions is part of the role. You will need to come to agreement with the independent auditors, client, and Oleeo development team on how to address each finding.


You will maintain a breakdown of work required to develop solutions by creating Tickets for each item of work and regularly updating these tickets in a timely manner and will also assist in providing an overview of accessibility initiatives to Clients and to internal audiences within Oleeo (for example contribute to a regular report or summary of how issues raised in an independent audit are being addressed and progressed).


This role is a member of the Front End Team which includes Javascript Developers, UX Developers, UI Researchers.


This role can be based in Wimbledon or hybrid home working can be discussed at the interview stage.

Key skills & experience 1
Most important is to have the combination of web developer experience and a passion for Accessibility. You are excited about the career direction of ‘accessibility expert’ for web applications.

You must be able to demonstrate knowledge of accessibility principles and issues including familiarity with WCAG guidelines (current and historical), the challenges that accessibility requirements may present to the web developer, approaches or standard design patterns and how to implement them appropriately in HTML, CSS, Javascript.

You will have to be confident as a Javascript Developer within a large team. The development process will include using GIT to manage branches for each change, merging branches and resolving conflicts, submitting for independent code review, following best practice processes etc.

It is expected that you will become an expert at HTML and CSS. You must be confident with Javascript but you might not be an expert (although expertise is always highly valued within the Oleeo development team).

You should have knowledge of designing for web accessibility standards and using assistive technology including screen readers, voice control and magnification. You will become an expert in the use of JAWS.

Turning WCAG guidelines into coded solutions is open to some interpretation and compromise. You will have to be able to discuss interpretations, present alternative solutions for evaluation, and to evaluate solutions proposed by others. This will involve verbal discussions as well as email so you must be an effective communicator in these situations.

Work with various teams developing new features to share accessibility expertise as projects move from conception to launch.
