The Opportunity

The UX Accessibility Specialist is the boots on the ground advocate promoting a well-designed, good experience for all users regardless of ability or access technology. They are the first line of defense when it comes to championing digital accessibility and serve as the voice for those who depend on Ally to practice inclusive design. The UX Accessibility Specialist reports to the Director of Inclusive Design within our UX practice, and serves as key member of Ally’s Digital Accessibility Program.

The Work Itself

Works under supervision of the UX Director of Inclusive Design to synthesize practical digital design guidance from qualitative research as directed to achieve the highest quality, most inclusive user experience
Partners with Digital Product, UX and IT squads to implement accessible WCAG 2.1 AA industry leading enhancements
Assists in introduction to accessibility training, as well as role-specific accessibility training sessions
Provides squad-level training and technical support in accordance with industry standard W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines
Supports the broader UX practice as the SME on accessibility best practices and the principles of inclusive design through 1-on-1 consulting, design crit and office hours identifying issues and optimizing design ahead of development
Engages partners and product teams as the SME on Accessibility for various areas throughout the enterprise, analyzing audits, and delivering reports for supported lines of business
Studies emerging technology and experience patterns to constantly help guide our approach to accessibility
Assists in planning and execution of activities related to Global Accessibility Awareness Month – a month of sessions and workshops to increase knowledge of digital accessibility and inclusive design across the enterprise
Supports planning and presenting on research and emerging technologies in the quarterly Accessibility Guild
Provides expertise to influence the UX design system, and collaborates with Inclusive Design team members to build and maintain an internal digital reference library consisting of standards, specifications, and general guidance on accessibility
The Skills You Bring

Ability to communicate with Managers, UX Designers, Developers, and testers to successfully deliver projects and techniques
Demonstrable UX research, concepting, and design skills with a portfolio detailing insights on research and problem-solving
Proficiency in UX design authoring tools such as Sketch or Invision, and a willingness to try new tools
Understanding of mobile and web accessibility with knowledge of JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, Talkback and aXe, with a passion to learn more
Strong attention to detail and comprehension of accessibility best practices
Demonstrated understanding of user experience, web content accessibility guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 standards and practices, and WAI-ARIA for both desktop and mobile technology
Deep technical knowledge on proper use of markup to optimize web accessibility
Commitment to continuous learning
Passion to advocate for accessibility and inclusive design
1+ years experience in user experience design required
1 year of experience designing for accessibility required
CPACC and/or WAS preferred
