Program Director for Assistive Technology and Accessible Materials

The Program Director for Assistive Technology and Accessible Materials oversees and coordinates the assessment and provision of assistive technology and the conversion of materials into an alternative accessible formats in a timely fashion based on approved accommodations of for students, staff, faculty, and patients/visitors. The Program Director works closely with schools, departments and programs to assess the needs of individuals with approved accommodations to provide appropriate technologies and convert materials into accessible formats through in-house resources or by working through appropriate vendors and contractors. The position supervises, manages and directs assistive technology support staff, maintains strong relationships with vendors and contractors, and stays abreast of new technologies and trends to enhance support for those with approved accommodations in compliance with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

The Program Director will report to the Executive Director of the Duke Disability Management System (DMS). DMS is the office responsible for ensuring Duke University continues to meet its responsibilities under the Rehabilitation Act, ADA, and similar laws. This includes facilitating various processes for qualified individuals with disabilities to request reasonable accommodations that are needed to ensure their equitable access to Duke’s program, benefits, and services.

Work Performed

Possesses and applies a working knowledge and expertise of relevant laws, regulations, policies, and guidance regarding accessible materials and assistive technology.

Collaborates with representatives from schools, programs and departments to identify and convert materials into appropriate alternative formats to support individuals with approved accommodations at Duke.

Evaluates individual needs for assistive technology and coordinates with appropriate partners and vendors to facilitate the provision of those technologies.

Schedules and assigns tasks to assistive technology support staff based on accommodation requests, which may include the development of materials with tactile creation, captioning, enlargement, sighted assistance, etc.

Ensures compliance with Duke’s Accessible Curriculum Materials policy for the conversion of academic curriculum for students with approved accommodations.

Manages high volume of alternate format/electronic texts requests and provide conversion of assessments, print materials, and textbooks to alternative formats.

Utilizes hardware and software applications to convert digital files to alternative formats such as, but not limited to, digital audio text, closed captioning, voice input and output, tagging and scanning.

Consults with faculty and instructional staff on instructional technology to implement reasonable and appropriate accommodations.

Coordinates training in the use of assistive technology by providing technical and instructional support related to technology through department generated supplemental training, videos and instructions.

Maintains database of assistive technology with the location of equipment and software, and ensures a current list of alternate texts is maintained; maintains and updates an online repository for student textbooks/materials in alternative format.

Stays informed about existing and new assistive technology and trends for use in education and employment, recommends the software and hardware to meet present and future needs for accommodation needs.

Collaborates with the Office of Information Technology, Web Accessibility and Duke Health Technology Solutions and other technology support units in the advancement of Duke-wide accessibility.

Develop training materials such as documents, PowerPoints, videos, etc., that can be widely distributed to the Duke community to support others in creating accessible materials and resources.

Determine and communicate standards and best practices as well as train staff to support these processes.

Assesses options for outside vendors/contractors to convert materials as needed and regularly assesses the performance and timeliness of work

Functional/Technical Knowledge & Skills

High-level training and experience in use and application of technology relevant to accessibility support.

Knowledge of requirements of Section 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act, Family Educational Rights Privacy Act, and other relevant laws.

Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods.

Computer skills, program applications, assistive technology, communication skills, organization skills, and other administrative functions, including but not limited to: Dragon Naturally Speaking, Sonocent, JAWS, Read&Write Gold, and ZoomText.

Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.


Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree with a minimum of four years of related experience.
Assistive technology work in a higher education disability services setting preferred.
Experience working with Accommodate case management database software a plus.
Proficiency with a wide array of assistive technologies and basic computer programs such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Zoom, and Google-Suite.

Education

Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

Experience

Work requires the ability to plan and administer programs and direct OR ANY OTHER EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE. program activities within a specific functional area, generally acquired through four years of related experience.
