Introduction

The IT Accessibility Coordinator position was created as result of Governor’s Executive Order 01.01.2017.23, which directs the Maryland Department of Disabilities (MDOD) to designate a staff person to collaborate with the Department of Information Technology (DoIT) and the Department of General Services (DGS) to provide accessibility technical assistance during State procurement processes and address accessibility concerns of State employees utilizing State provided IT solutions.

This is a full-time position for MDOD - MD Technology Assistance Program.

Main Purpose of Job

MDOD facilitates the coordination of accessible State services in compliance with State and federal laws. DoIT and DGS support State agencies in developing, funding and implementing information technology services. All three agencies collaborate to ensure that the state procures, develops and implements accessible information technology systems.

The IT Accessibility Coordinator will provide technical assistance with identified DoIT staff to ensure that State information technology services and systems are accessible to people with disabilities. Specifically, this position is responsible for identifying potential accessibility issues and compliance violations and coordinating solutions with State agency IT and/or procurement staff. The position involves providing training and creating guidelines to be used by procurement and/or IT staff. The selected candidate will lead MDOD’s effort to ensure that the State provides exemplary barrier-free information and communication technology and oversee compliance with State and federal regulations to ensure that people with disabilities can access the information and communication technology resources provided by the State.

A driver's license is not required for this position.

This is a Special Appointment position and serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Science, Information Technology, Accessibility, or a related field.

Experience: Two years of experience developing, procuring, testing, or remediating accessible technology as it complies with Section 508, W3C Standards, and/or the State of Maryland Non-Visual Access standards.

OR

Education: A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in any discipline.

Experience: Four years of experience developing, procuring, testing, or remediating accessible technology as it complies with Section 508, W3C Standards, and/or the State of Maryland Non-Visual Access standards.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of ADA, Section 504 (part 794 in particular) and 508, Universal design principles, and WCAG 2.1.

Broad experience working with the disabled community.

Excellent teamwork skills.

Experience leading workshops and/or staff trainings.

Strong written and verbal communications skills.

Preferred candidate will have completed Accessibility Training courses focused on procurement and purchasing utilizing 508 guidelines, available through GSA Section 508.gov or through the Federal Acquisition Institute, or Department of Homeland Security Trusted Tester program.
