Duties and Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Director of Disability Support Services, the Accessibility & Assistive Technology Coordinator supports the institution in the implementation and monitoring of digital accessibility to include auxiliary aid and support services for students with disabilities. The Coordinator also interprets and ensures Bowie State University’s compliance with local, state and federal laws as it relates to Electronic and Information Technology (EIT) accessibility.

Specific duties include:

Support the institution in the monitoring of digital accessibility across the university.

Provide accessibility solutions to faculty, staff, and students.

Manage the university-wide materials conversion (text to alternative format) process for students, problem solving and recommending best approaches on a case-by-case basis. This includes coordinating the provision of alternative format textbooks and course materials in a timely manner.

Manage/oversee Adaptive Technology lab to include but not limited to: maintaining equipment, assist with acquisition of new adaptive equipment, manage upgrades and updates, manage inventory/track loaner equipment and advise on technical issues to insure products are utilized.

Develop/maintain expertise on current and new assistive technologies, for example: Sonecent, Jaws, Kurzweil, etc.

Develop and deliver training on assistive technology for students, faculty, and staff.

Manage ongoing reporting, data collection and analysis on use of adaptive technology.

Develop and deliver training for Accommodate, DSS database management system.

Work collaboratively with the Director of DSS to align policies and procedures as it relates to Electronic and Information Technology (EIT) accessibility compliance.

Participate on departmental, divisional, or campus-wide committees related to technology and collaboratively provide training for campus stakeholders.

Assist the director with developing, revising, and maintaining accessible content on our website, providing exemplary sites, including information about policies, processes, training, events, and programming.

Stay abreast of best practice in assistive technology, updating pages and adding new resources in a timely and accessible manner.

Design and deliver training/workshops around assistive technologies for stakeholders

Participate in professional development and training to keep current with disability related Electronic and Information Technology (EIT) compliance.

Plan and implement Electronic and Information Technology (EIT) event(s) to increase awareness of DSS services.

Assist DSS staff with other functional areas as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

Education
Bachelor’s Degree Required.

Experience
Minimum of three (3) years of administrative experience addressing Electronic and Information Technology issues.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of Electronic and Information Technology (EIT) accessibility standards, trends and requirements.

Knowledge of disability related issues relating to electronic technology access.

Must have working knowledge of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and all other pertinent federal and state requirements regarding Electronic and Information Technology accessibility.

Ability to learn a wide array of assistive technologies and basic computer programs (Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Zoom, Publisher, MS Teams, BlackBoard).

The ability to manage and troubleshoot technical issues for assistive technologies, including hardware and software in a timely and efficient manner.


Conditions of Employment
The candidate must be able to occasionally work evenings and weekends, as needed.
