Mobile App Accessibility Specialist

We are looking for an Accessibility Specialist who shares Oath’s passion for making mobile products and services accessible to people with disabilities. In this role you will be a member of Oath’s award-winning Accessibility team, will work with internationally recognized leaders who have changed the Assistive Technology industry, and with industry-leading engineers and designers. Reflecting Oath’s singular focus on users and mobile experiences, you will create products that don’t just meet minimum accessibility requirements, but deliver extraordinary user experiences you will be proud to recommend to anyone, including people with disabilities.


Your primary role is to work directly with Oath’s global product teams as Oath’s in-house Mobile App Accessibility expert on products designed for Android and iOS. Your responsibilities include: conduct product evaluations, identify barriers to accessibility, provide feedback and guidance during product development, train engineers on best practices, propose or invent technical solutions, and validate that our mobile apps not only function as expected with Assistive Technology, but that they set the standard for usability. You will be working on products and services across all of Oath’s brands including Tumblr, HuffPost, RYOT Labs, Yahoo Mail, Yahoo Finance, Yahoo Sports, Yahoo Fantasy, Yahoo News, and

This role will be located in Sunnyvale, California where you’ll work in a state-of-the-art Accessibility Lab in the heart of Silicon Valley with access to the latest mobile devices, Assistive Technology, and experts in the field. Your work day will include a variety of tasks such as product evaluations, leading discussions and giving presentations or demonstrating Accessible design principles and best practices to engineers, designers, product managers, and often VIP guests. You’ll adopt, develop and propose new evaluation tools, techniques and methodologies, facilitate user studies, and support the ongoing activities of Oath’s pioneering Accessibility Lab.


A successful candidate will have outstanding skill using one or more popular screen readers such as VoiceOver and TalkBack and experience using or training users on a variety of assistive technologies such as switches, alternate input devices, magnifiers. They will have the ability to learn new products quickly, strong time-management skills, ability to work effectively to a deadline, and a passion for working in a fast-paced high-tech environment. This is an active, hands-on role that demands someone who enjoys getting out of their chair to work side by side with a variety of cross-functional teams on multiple products simultaneously. A successful candidate will have excellent oral and written communication skills and be able to clearly articulate technical concepts and issues to designers, software engineers, and product managers. Attention to detail is a must. Some travel is required (typically only a few days once or twice a quarter.)


Five or more years experience evaluating mobile app accessibility

Expert in VoiceOver or Talkback. (Expertise using NVDA and JAWS a plus)

Expert in using iOS and Android and their accessibility features

Strong knowledge of industry best practices and guidelines for accessibility

Strong presentation and writing skills

Preferable Skills and Experience

• MS degree in Computer Science or related field

• Strong knowledge of Cocoa, Xcode, Swift, Javascript, Eclipse, Android Studio

• Experience using JIRA, Google Suite (Docs, Drive, Meet/Hangouts) and Jive

• Formal User Experience Research

• Ability to read and write using Braille and the use of refreshable braille displays

• Conversational in multiple languages including sign language
