The Assistive Technology Specialist promotes academic access to University curriculum and educational opportunities for disabled students by training and supporting CAE staff and students in the use of assistive technology (JAWS, Kurzweil, Magic, Zoom Text); assists the Alternative Format Specialist in formating education material into accessible formats (Braille, Word, .pdf, etc.); Works with CAE staff and other campus entities to perform accessibility testing and ensure content is accessible for visually impaired students, and supports the CAE as a diagnostic and consultative team member by providing ongoing technical assistance to students and University staff.

Required/Preferred
Ability to train and provide technological support to disabled students and resolve assistive technology problems.
Required
Working knowledge of and proficiency in various programs, including Kurzweil, JAWS, Magic, and Zoom Text.
Can be trained
Working knowledge of and proficiency in braille programs, PCs, Macs, and portable audio devices.
Can be trained
Working knowledge of computers, and software (Windows, Excel, and Microsoft Word) and ability to do basic word processing.
Preferred
Ability to utilize Braille writer, Braille embosser, and high speed scanner to convert course materials into Braille and other formats for students with visual impairments.
Required
Knowledge of latest trends in higher education disability services with a specific focus on assistive technology and accessibility.
Required
Working knowledge of the unique academic needs of disabled students in a university setting and of the types of campus and community services, adaptive aids and assistive technology necessary to meet their needs.
Preferred
Ability to work collaboratively with CAE staff and provide training and guidance on assistive technology.
Required
Ability to work under pressure with frequent deadlines, making thoughtful decisions with speed and accuracy. Skill in working independently, organizing workload and following through on assignments with limited supervision.

Ability to work with existing service delivery systems and propose new mechanisms or procedures for managing complicated service delivery activities.

Ability to contact departments on campus and organizations off campus as a representative of the CAE.

Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with university departments and professors, and diplomatically with students of various disabilities and from diverse backgrounds. Skill at advising students regarding disability management. Ability to deal with distraught students about sensitive issues in a tactful manner.

Ability to identify problems and successfully recommend solutions. Ability to assist in the development of processes and procedures with implementation and follow through.

Ability to communicate orally and make verbal and written presentations.
Preferred
Knowledge of FERPA and how it applies to working with student records.
