Job Description

Digital Manual Accessibility Auditor position is designed for professionals living with disabilities to participate in the process of delivering Accessibility Audits to WeCo's clients. Our manual auditing work is project-based and offered on an as-needed basis. This is “piece work,” meaning assignments are provided when client projects come in, and there are no guaranteed hours or minimum number of projects each month. Contractors are free to accept or decline individual assignments based on their availability. Description Key Responsibility The Digital Manual Accessibility Auditor Contractor role will participate in the process of delivering Manual Accessibility Audits to company clients as part of a team of digital accessibility professionals. As a professional living with a disability, you will use your unique expertise to identify barriers, document findings in clear reports, and provide recommendations that reflect real-world user impact. Desired Results Successful applicants will produce the following results: - Leverage their practical experience with adaptive devices or techniques to accurately review and identify WCAG 2.1 success criteria levels A/AA that have been met/not met on websites and on mobile apps. These audits are not conducted in a simulated environment. - Compile findings into approved company reporting format. - Leverage existing company processes to prescribe accurate remedies, and instructive guidance on remedy application for WCAG criteria that have not been met based on the current implementation of the feature/element. Remedies and guidance must be delivered in a written style that is suitable for comprehension for developers, designers, QA testers, product owners, legal and executive staff. - Communicate accessibility issues and remedies to clients in service meetings in a patient and professional manner. Skills, Traits and Competencies Applicant Minimal Skills, Traits and Competencies: - Must be a person living with a disability – this is a core requirement for the Manual Auditor role and central to our mission. - 2+ years previous experience in adaptive/assistive technology or techniques when utilizing websites or mobile devices (e.g., screen readers, magnification software, voice recognition). - 1-2 years previous experience in non-simulated Manual Accessibility Audits. - Prior experience, demonstrated knowledge, or education regarding: data analysis, extrapolation, and reporting methods including analytical software; automated accessibility testing procedures for websites, software, and online venues; explaining accessibility requirements associated with WCAG 2.1 level A/AA principles and guidelines to technical and non-technical audiences; ability to read and understand basic HTML markup, JavaScript, and CSS style sheets; user interface web design concepts and principles when designing for users with disabilities (styling, readability, layout, navigation, focus indicators, color contrast, use of color); verification of the conformance of WCAG up to 2.1 level A/AA (level 2.2 a plus); demonstrated understanding of internationally recognized accessibility guidelines including WCAG 2.1 AA and Section 508; excellent written and expressive communication skills; basic knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript; demonstrated knowledge of ARIA and its use. - Ability to work well within a team setting. - Ability to take work direction and work autonomously. Applicant Preferred Skills, Traits and Competencies: - IAAP Web Accessibility Specialist (WAS) certification. - Adept at Android mobile interfaces. - Prior experience or education regarding user-experience testing. - Successful experience working in virtual office or remote workplace environments. - Prior experience interacting with people who live with disabilities. - Experience with assistive computer technology and devices (screen readers, screen magnifiers, voice recognition software, alternative input devices). Other Information Position Length and Time Commitment This position is designed to serve as a periodic contract arrangement, depending upon company needs. We aim to build long-term contract relationships with experienced Manual Accessibility Audit Contractors who can deliver accurate manual audit results within deadlines during peak project demand periods. Time commitments depend on the project and are negotiated based on contractor availability. Location Remote through virtual office interface on Microsoft Teams.
