Job summary
We are looking for someone with experience building backend services and automating mission critical software and services to help shape the future of accessibility for our reading and shopping experiences. We are seeking a passionate, hard-working, and talented software development Engineer to join our team.

The ideal candidate is proactive, responsive, flexible and able to succeed within an open collaborative peer environment. They have a combination of in-depth knowledge of computer science principles and how to architect software for maximum longevity, and a solid understanding of automated testing concepts. They demonstrate creative approaches to building services which expose usability and functional defects in production level code at the API, component, feature and UI integration levels. SDEs at Amazon are expected to have industry-leading technical abilities that enable them to significantly improve product quality.

This engineer will join the Books and Retail Accessibility team, the team responsible for building technology to detect accessibility issues and enforce launch requirements across web and mobile application used by readers and shoppers worldwide. Our team solves complex problems for customers with disabilities. We build tools and technology that support the architecture, design and development of accessibility test automation across Amazon. We deliver accessibility features across a diverse set of experiences including Kindle, mShop and AWS. We solve the challenges faced by people with disabilities to ensure every customer, regardless of age, location, or ability, can read and shop on-line with Amazon.

Role and Responsibilities:
You will contribute to the development of a combination mobile and web accessibility automation framework. You will contribute to and deliver designs, development, integration, test, documentation, and support of native mobile code, Java and C++ software across multiple platforms (iOS, Android, E-Reader, PC). You will work with Product Managers, and Software Development Engineers (SDEs).

Key job responsibilities

The SDE is specifically responsible for:

Designing innovative software solutions, building new concepts and methodologies, hands on problem-solving and writing efficient code.
Delivering features and experiences that are highly performant and scalable.
Influencing the team’s technical and business strategy
Investigating operational issues, resolving customer pain points, and developing and maintaining high-quality standards that create loyal Amazon customers.
Instilling best practices for software development and documentation, making sure designs meet requirements, and delivering high quality software on tight schedules.

About the team
Our team focuses on Accessibility Excellence in order to deliver delightful experiences for customers with disabilities for the Books and Retail teams. We coach our builder teams in both awareness and accountability to remove and prevent barriers in customer experiences. We deliver features that improve the way customers with disabilities engage with Amazon’s reading, shopping, and authoring experiences. And we build tools that support testing of accessibility for web and mobile experiences at Amazon without requiring subject matter expertise.

Experience automating accessibility testing for web pages and applications is highly preferred.
Mobile application development on iOS and/ or Android
Experience with open source tools and test frameworks.
Automation architecture development and/or maintenance experience.
Experience building products and services that are accessible to blind and low vision customers, complying with industry standards such as WCAG 2.x
Experience with JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver or other accessibility technology is preferred.
