Accessibility Specialist

Zotero

Remote,USA/EUROPE

This job is expired.

Zotero is an open-source project that develops software and web services to help people collect, organize, cite, and share their research. Our software is recommended by most universities and used by millions of students, scholars, scientists, and researchers worldwide.

At Zotero, we’re committed to providing the best tools available for managing research, and making sure those tools remain accessible to the widest number of people, including people with disabilities, is fundamental to that goal. We’re looking for an accessibility specialist to lead our accessibility efforts across the Zotero ecosystem, on desktop, mobile, and web. You’ll identify areas where Zotero doesn’t live up to its accessibility goals and work with the developers and designers responsible for those areas to come up with solutions. You’ll serve as an educator and advocate for accessibility issues within the team, helping to ensure that new features and products are built with accessibility in mind. Most importantly, you’ll participate in a vibrant global open-source community with amazing community developers and passionate users, and you’ll get to witness your contributions making a huge difference in people’s academic and professional lives.

We’re an international, remote-only team. In happier times, we meet up occasionally around the world (falafel is often involved), but you’ll primarily be working remotely, communicating with Zotero users via our forums and Zotero developers via chat rooms and GitHub. We have a collaborative but often-asynchronous workflow, and you’ll be fully in control of your own schedule.

What We’re Looking For

- Extensive experience with accessibility and inclusive design
- Deep knowledge of accessibility tools (VoiceOver, JAWS, etc.)
- Experience evaluating software and/or websites for WCAG and Section 508 compliance
- Willingness to engage directly with users in public forums to discuss their experiences and troubleshoot problems
- Strong English communication skills — we discuss and debate nearly everything we do, so it’s critical that you can (and want to!) take part in that

Bonus Points

- Basic familiarity with HTML/CSS/JavaScript, including ARIA and other web accessibility technologies
- A love of free and open-source software

This could be a full-time or part-time role.

---

We’re committed to building a diverse and inclusive team that reflects the diverse, global community that uses our software. We strongly encourage people from traditionally underrepresented groups to apply.
