The Experiences & Devices (E+D) organization is looking for a principal leader to help us incorporate inclusive design earlier in our product life cycle.



We’re looking for a talented Assistive Technology Interaction Designer to drive Inclusive/Accessible Design across the E+D organization including experiences like Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, and Loop. We would love for you to join us to focus on the implementation and advancement of accessible design practices and make our products, services, and programs inclusive to everyone, including the 1 billion people with disabilities.



The role is dedicated to bringing together people across the spectrum of disability, leveraging knowledge in the discipline of accessibility. Building and gathering inclusive design best practices, technical capabilities, and efficiencies from across Microsoft.

This role will partner with engineering teams, hack projects and v-teams to isolate key projects that will benefit from support in elegant interaction design.
Responsibilities

Who you are:

You have deep expertise in accessibility or designing for users who use assistive technologies, such as screen readers, switches, captioning and other technologies.
You love working across teams on a mission and are eager to collaborate with and influence engineers and business folks to find elegant but practical solutions to design challenges.

Everything you do should aim to improve the lives of people with disabilities.

What you will do:

Help teams working on new features to design more inclusive experiences and consider marginalized communities
Develop curriculum and deliver training to product managers, engineers, and designers about how to design inclusive experiences
Partner with product mangers, designers and engineers early in the idea life cycle to create accessible designs.

Evolve best practices and guidelines of disability, diversity, inclusion, and global usability through customer engagements and usability.
Identify inclusive product investment opportunities and help champion them with leadership
Participate in the design, observation, and analysis of user research and design sprints designed to bring product teams closer to the customer. You’ll help teams learn how to do this independently so you can scale your experience.
Provide coaching and mentorship and evangelize accessible practices to other engineers to help drive Accessible culture throughout the organization.
Contribute to the Inclusive Design Toolkit for Microsoft and any future iterations that need to be for it.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, or related field AND 8+ years experience working in product or service design | OR equivalent experience


Preferred Qualifications:

8+ years’ experience visual interaction or product design
You’ve created a scalable program within an organization that requires buy-in and action from different business units
5+ years experience in accessibility or inclusive design applications.
Experience working in or with product management and engineering teams
Experience influencing cross-organizational culture and job tactics changes —being able to indirectly influence people who are not on our team is the key success factor in this role.
