The Quality Assurance Team is looking for a Quality Assurance Engineer! We are looking for a person that is able to work independently and as part of a team of creative problem solvers. We work on AITS, campus, System Office, and vended applications. A lot of interaction and collaboration takes place in our day-to-day work. Training and mentorship will be provided. The position will be hybrid or 100% Remote Eligible. Recent college graduates with relevant course work, and people with a lot of computer software savvy are welcome to apply. Job Summary

Performs duties that are devoted to providing Quality Assurance (QA) for software systems built and deployed by AITS, System Office units, as well as some campus units. Design, implement, execute tests and compile reports to ensure the quality of applications integrated with the University's Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, and other software systems in use by the University. The types of applications tested are web-based and mobile. Software languages and scripting languages used to develop the applications include JAVA, JavaScript, jQuery, JSP, HTML, XML, SQL, .Net, and ColdFusion. The database may be Microsoft SQL Server or Oracle database technologies on Windows and UNIX platforms. Responsibilities for the position require software testing technical expertise, and general intellectual, analytical and writing skills utilizing knowledge of quality assurance practices.

Duties & Responsibilities

1. Work as a member of the QA team to do test design, test development, test operations and associated reporting for web-based, and mobile applications potentially using one or more of the following technologies: MicroFocus Group (MFG) Unified Functional Tester (UFT), IBM Rational Performance Tester, HCL Rational AppScan, ReQtest Requirements and Testing application, or software utilized to conduct accessibility tests for Illinois Information Technology Accessibility Act (IITAA) compliance (i.e. JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, TalkBack, etc.). Conceptualize an overall test methodology and follow through with creation and maintenance of a test plan and automated test scripts. Provide estimates for various testing tasks throughout the full Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
2. Carry out the appropriate procedures to ensure that all information systems products and services meet standards and end-user requirements and those systems operate properly and are free from defects and security vulnerabilities. Create and execute work plans to meet deadlines and set priorities where appropriate. Develop test designs and results utilizing sound security practices and techniques. This includes assisting developers in resolving any vulnerability issues discovered in the application during vulnerability scans.
3. Research, conceptualize, define and communicate ideas and issues; provide insight, recommend action, and pursue solutions to problems as related to projects and assignments. Make recommendations about design issues, policies, standards and strategies.
4. Document defects or system problems encountered and provide reports on these problems to the project team, project leads, and management. Document procedures relevant to the quality assurance function including analysis, test case design, testing and tracking issues.
5. Keep abreast of relevant testing tools, procedures, technical specifications and advancements in the field. Pursue professional development activities to expand knowledge and maintain currency in industry trends and practices. Participate in certification programs and meet annual certification goals.
6. Work collaboratively with senior and junior personnel in various situations where it is necessary to either receive or provide coaching and mentoring. Coordinate and encourage working relationships with peers and other appropriate University personnel to achieve defined goals & objectives. Participate in technical information sharing opportunities with fellow team members. Work with a wide variety of clients, analysts, developers, and support personnel.
7. Communicate ideas, requirements, application behavior, and recreate steps through written and verbal communications.
8. Provide project management support for small and medium projects and provide on-call and off-hours support as assigned.
9. Perform other related duties appropriate for a QA Engineer.

Minimum Qualifications

1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Any combination totaling two (2) years (24 months) from the following categories:

College coursework which includes Information Technology (IT), IT Management, Programming, IT systems, or a closely related discipline, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
Associate's Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
achelor's Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)
Work experience in IT-related functions, such as hardware/software support, programming, network design, network engineering, IT systems integration, or closely related field.


Preferred Qualifications

1. Recent college graduate or some experience with automated testing tools which includes work on complex projects requiring increased skill in writing clear, concise, and comprehensive test plans and executing test cases on web-based, and mobile applications.
2. Experience working in or a good understanding of an Agile development process.
3. Higher education experience.
4. Bachelor's degree in computer science, management information sciences, engineering, or experience with computer applications and systems.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. Proficient with the Microsoft suite of applications.
2. Technical competence with SQL queries.
3. Technical competence with testing tools such as MicroFocus Group (MFG) Unified Functional Tester (UFT), IBM Rational Performance Tester, HCL Rational AppScan, ReQtest Requirements and Testing application, or software utilized to conduct accessibility tests for Illinois Information Technology Accessibility Act (IITAA) compliance (i.e., JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, TalkBack, etc.).
4. A desire to learn new skills, technical concepts, and be part of a team environment.
5. Demonstrated experience, expertise and skills in software testing processes and associated techniques.
6. Knowledge of software QA methodologies, tools, and processes.
7. Knowledge of SQL and scripting.
8. Strong project analysis and research skills.
9. Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
10. Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
11. Knowledge of computer industry quality assurance best practices.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5031 - Information Technology Technical Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close date. Salary is commensurate with experience.
