Teaching & Learning Technologist - Digital Accessibility

Term - 1 year contract and could go full time for the right person

The Teaching & Learning Technologist will assist faculty and senior-level teaching and learning designers in remediating inaccessible digital content, including documents, online courses, media, and websites, in accordance with the Digital Accessibility Policy. Develop accessible learning content for use in face-to-face, blended, and online environments that most effectively meet the needs of the students and faculty within the given cost parameters. Interpret and apply current best practices of instructional design and digital accessibility for the development of creative solutions. Support and train students and faculty in using technologies, including software and hardware used in face-to-face, blended, and face-to-face learning environments.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Assist university faculty and staff to (1) design and develop accessible blended and distance education courses and distance education course materials, (2) revise and/or remediate course materials, and (3) integrate digital best practices into face-to-face, blended, and fully online teaching environments via zoom. (30%)

2. Utilize existing training and support materials to advise student employees, and Teaching and Learning Technology staff to improve the digital accessibility of instructional methods, materials, and technologies using Canvas Ally and TeamDynamix. (20%)

3. Assist in the creation and maintenance of accessible, reusable interactive learning objects, templates, publications, resources, and other course materials that meet a broad range of instructional needs and serve as state-of-the-art solutions for those faculty needs. (15%)

4. Assist in the design of professional development and specific group workshops for faculty and staff on digital accessibility best practices for face-to-face and online environments. (10%)

5. Assist in the creation of a collection of general digital accessibility training materials (e.g., step-by-step guides, reference manuals, online modules, web-based templates, etc.) to be used by faculty and staff engaged in learning and using educational technologies. (10%)

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Maintain an understanding of universal design for learning, as well applicable digital accessibility regulations and how to apply them to online course content. (5%)

2. Stay abreast of emerging digital accessibility trends and technologies related to instructional design for in-person, blended, and distance education. (5%)

3. Provide support of academic technologies such as the learning management system, including answering Help Desk tickets and providing face-to-face and virtual support. (3%)

4. Remain current with accessible media design and creation skills in appropriate technologies. (2%)

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree in instructional design, information technology or related field and no experience OR Associate's degree in instructional design, information technology or related field and 1 year of experience.

REQUIRED SKILLS

1. Knowledge and understanding of digital accessibility, hardware and software regularly used in teaching and learning, including learning management systems, video conferencing, media creation tools, and classroom based technologies.

2. Basic knowledge of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines and Universal Design for Learning Framework.

3. Excellent customer service skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a team and take direction from more senior team members.

4. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, work under deadlines, and handle changing priorities.

5. Basic knowledge of principles and practices of graphic design and Adobe Acrobat Pro.

6. Knowledge of accessible digital media production principles, methods, techniques and standards.

7. Knowledge of industry-standard multimedia authoring tools and a general familiarity with graphic design principles.

8. Some experience using instructional applications such as learning management systems, lecture capture, video conferencing and Google Apps.

9. Ability to utilize professional audiovisual facilities and equipment

10. Basic knowledge of web-based programming and related programming standards.

11. An understanding of digital accessibility standards such as WCAG, as well as how to apply these standards to create content that is accessible to all learners.

12. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Interacts with various levels within or outside the University including faculty, staff, students, deans, directors and department heads. Ability to consistently communicate effectively with students, faculty, and staff. This interaction may include interpreting and explaining ideas and concepts as well as solving problems. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors and customers face to face.

13. Ability to respond to difficult, stressful, or sensitive interpersonal situations in ways that reduce or minimize potential conflict and maintain good working relationships among internal and external customers. The ability to recognize awkward or potentially embarrassing situations that sometimes arise. Always aware of tone and careful choice of words, while at the same time ensuring that the intended message is clear, polite, and readily understood.

14. Ability to actively listen; responsive to verbal and non-verbal clues.

15. Excellent oral presentation skills and the ability to give presentations and lead workshops.

16. Consistently models high standards of honesty, integrity, trust, openness, and respect for the individual. Must have the ability to use discretion and good judgment on sensitive and important matters. Embraces diversity.

17. Experience working with diverse populations and willingness to support a community commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
