Basic qualifications/experience (the required qualifications which are critical to be considered for the position:
AEM is seeking a Senior Developer with strong experience developing highly accessible solutions. Going beyond basic 508 compliance, this role will involve the development of new tools that interact with education data systems to increase accessibility and use of education data. The role involves working with national, state and local stakeholders to design, develop and deploy accessible cloud-based solutions.

The Senior Developer will work closely with project managers, business analysts, technical and program team(s), and clients with information technology aspects of project startup, execution, and closeout activities. Work will be done with designated teams to identify, design, and implement accessible solutions for increased data access and use.

Interested candidates should have extensive experience with accessibility aspects of systems design, development, and use. Candidates should be knowledgeable in industry best practices for implementing accessibility in web content and developing accessible solutions. In addition, candidates should understand how content is exposed to assistive technology and how to utilize tools to test accessibility across platforms. Strong preference will be given to candidates who have significant prior experience developing accessible data tools. Additional preference will be given to candidates who not only have technical skill but show effective experience interacting with business partners including partners with low vision, blindness, cognitive or physical disabilities.


Desired skills/certifications (any additional skills desired but not required to be considered for the position):

Extensive knowledge and experience with building tools for WCAG 2.0 accessibility.
Experience with accessibility audit and quality assurance tools and processes.
Minimum of five (5) years’ experience developing open standard software as a contributor.
Strong JavaScript TypeScript, HTML and CSS programming experience.
Experience working with automated DevOps pipelines.
Knowledge and experience with assistive technologies (e.g., JAWS, VoiceOver, Dragon NaturallySpeaking).
Demonstrated ability to lead projects effectively and independently to completion.
Familiarity with disability laws as it pertains to software development including but not limited to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (Section 504).
Experience using AI frameworks such as voice-to-text and text-to-voice is preferred
Experience with working with public cloud environments such as Azure or AWS is preferred.
Experience and relationships with the local and state education agencies a plus.
Bachelor’s Degree preferred


Summary of position/daily activities:

Work with colleagues in the institution’s web services to develop accessible templates and tools for web production.
Engage and influence international standards organization on accessibility solutions and strategies.
Work with partners and national associations to establish guidelines, best practices and standards related to designing and maintaining accessible websites, IT software systems and online materials.

Develop, test, and review user interfaces

Work with business users to understand and document strategies and solutions for IT accessibility
Mentor colleagues in the application of accessibility best practices and standards in developing accessible solutions.
