Description of Position: The Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology is seeking applications for a Manager, Geoscience Data position. The position supervises assigned staff and directly advises the Nevada State Geologist (NBMG Director), NBMG faculty and staff, and other state and federal agencies. The data manager will organize and update large geoscience and geospatial datasets for the State of Nevada as needed, oversee conversion of legacy hard-copy information and physical samples to digital formats, design and maintain relational database management systems, provide universal access for the scientific databases, and educate the many user groups on the reliability and availability of the data sets. This position will utilize a variety of platforms for data storage, retrieval, and dissemination, including open-source software and tools, ArcGIS servers, enterprise geodatabase servers, PostgreSQL servers, AWS servers, and more. In addition to engaging the faculty, staff, hardware, and software systems of the Bureau, the data manager collaborates with the University Libraries’ digital information and preservation unit as well as The Office of Information Technology’s faculty, central hardware, and software systems.

The Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology (NBMG) is a public service unit of the University of Nevada, Reno, and serves as the state geological survey for Nevada. NBMG’s mission is to obtain, maintain and broadly disseminate geologic information from Nevada, including data on the geologic framework, natural resources, and geologic hazards of the state, in order to facilitate public safety and sustainable development. NBMG houses the Great Basin Science and Sample Records Library (GBSSRL), which is a unique collection of information and physical samples from Nevada mining activity, geothermal, oil, and gas exploration, engineering geology, hydrology, historical aerial photography, and much more. The GBSSRL’s information contributes to research by students and professors, mineral and energy exploration, as well as economic development and diversification in Nevada. This managerial position is responsible for specialized and varied research analytics functions and oversees cataloguing, digitizing, organizing, and disseminating of geoscience datasets for the State of Nevada, which are housed at the GBSSRL

Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree and four years of relevant professional work experience OR Master’s Degree and two years of related professional work experience.
Related professional work experience: coursework or work experience in Computer Science, Geoinformatics, Database Administration, Geology, Geography, or a related field; and experience in developing and/or using relational database management, digital preservation/archiving, information system architecture, and custom web applications.

Certification and Licensure: Valid Driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications:
• Proven project management and experience with GIS suites (e.g., ESRI).
• Successful management of public and private large datasets (hundreds of terabytes or more)
• Proficiency in web presentation technologies
• Familiarity with Section accessibility compliance for large institutions
• Experience with database technology, including design, maintenance, performance tuning, translation, archiving, and securing
• Programming Language Skill in big-data management, analysis, and manipulation
