Cornell University is seeking a dynamic and committed web accessibility professional to join in a demanding and visible position as an Electronic Information Technology (EIT) Accessibility Coordinator. The Coordinator will play an integral part in helping to ensure an effective compliance program university-wide. The work includes collaborating with campus entities, departments, and committees to ensure the accessibility of technology, systems, applications, websites, etc.

The Coordinator must demonstrate experience and leadership in the promotion and implementation of accessibility measures in EIT. The Coordinator is the key advocate, expert and first contact for the University community on questions about web accessibility. The individual in this role must have proven strengths in communication skills.


Primary responsibilities include:

Establish and communicate guidelines, best practices and standards related to designing and maintaining accessible websites and online materials.
Identify, analyze, and mitigate enterprise risks.
Effectively communicate complex technical concepts to less-technical stakeholders in a clear and easily digestible manner.
Manage the workflow and prioritization of accessibility projects and take appropriate corrective action when necessary; provides advice and counsel on ADA issues.
Develop and implement outreach and training on principles, tools and techniques for members of the University community who maintain websites or use the web to deliver instructional materials.
Actively involved in the technology and technical services procurement process to help ensure accessibility requirements are made part of contractual agreements.
Lead accessibility audits of key institutional websites and web applications and evaluations for websites and applications under consideration for purchase.
Identify, implement and oversee tools for supporting website accessibility.
Develop and maintain a Web Accessibility website or a robust resource section under the Cornell Accessibility website.
Create and deliver reports, articles and presentations as needed.
Management of any established accessibility budget.
Management of as-needed resources to help bring top sites into compliance. This includes:all aspects of staffing, employee training and development,
Keep informed of developments in accessibility related systems and solutions and share these with university stakeholders. Make recommendations and implement agreed upon systems and solutions.
Stay actively involved with professional organizations and peer institutions to both gather and share knowledge.
Stay up to date with current legislation and lawsuits regarding access against other universities, as well as other businesses and state and local governments.

Required Qualifications:

Minimum of five to seven years of experience in web accessibility.Specifically, expertise and providing guidance in WCAG 2.0 standards and Section 508 accessibility requirements in conjunction with knowledge of the Americans with Disability Act Amendments (ADAA) and other relevant laws and regulations in a complex higher education environment and how these laws directly impact what services may be provided and how those services are delivered.
Knowledge of principles guiding application of reasonable modifications under the ADA.
Bachelor’s degree; more than 4 years of experience or equiv.
Experience drafting accessible technology guidelines, procedures and policies. Experience evaluating third party technology systems against accessibility standards.Demonstrated experience in training and public speaking.
Proven record of success as a collaborative partner.
Effective communication, listening and negotiation skills.
Able to assimilate and organize large bodies of diverse information.
Able to create clear, concise documentation.
Demonstrated understanding of principles and application of critical thinking and analysis.
Able to work in a fast-paced, dynamic team environment with conflicting and constantly changing priorities.

Preferred Qualifications:

User Experience skills
Website content editing skills
Project management experience
Experience in higher education
Knowledge of accessible web development, including HTML, CSS, etc. Skills
Familiarity with Drupal and/or WordPress as content management systems
Experience in testing electronic information with automated testing tools and assistive technology such as screen readers, screen magnifiers, and speech recognition software.
